Sleep - by Tom Rotert

Do you have a poem or story to share?   Send them to me.

Sleep little angel
because
I cannot.
Lay still in my arms;

They wrap you around
like a shroud

And I float above you,
a warm thunder cloud.
Here poised to water,
to give to you strength,
to nourish you gently,
and whisper love softly.

Sleep little angel
because
I cannot.
Time slips fast from me
or is stollen away.
And when I am home
I will cherish this day when you slept in my arms

and I watched you all night--
took note of your breathing
in your peaceful recline,
I will lock in my large vault
inventories of each scent:
your hair
your neck
your fingers
your breath

And invent new stories
of the places we went:

I have sand in my day pack from that beach out of town
petals from roses and the flowers we drowned
money you touched
a napkin with your lips
and a shard from the wine glass
we emptied by sips.

Sleep little angel
because
I cannot

My plane cries in five hours
let me hold you this night
