| "Hi," while most Filipinos speak English a little, or even a lot,
the main everyday language is Pilipino which is mainly Tagalog words. Like
natives of all countries we appreciate and honor visitors that at least try to learn a few
simple sentences to use during their trip. Also, it is surprise to see Tagalog words
in Western gentleman's letter, and make it stand out from rest of letters. We like
even if you did not say it exactly right. It is because it shows a desire to learn about
our culture which is reassuring since we worry about leaving so much behind if we move to
another country.
You may be confused about languages names. First of all, what is Filipino (Pilipino) and how is it different from Tagalog. (ta gol' log) Filipino = Tagalog + Local dialect words + Borrowed Foreign Words Filipino is the combination of Tagalog (the original dialect from which most words of Filipino are based), words from local dialects (The Philippines has a LOT of dialects like Bisaya (Visaya), Ilokano, and Kapampangan), and some borrowed foreign words adapted into this dynamic language. The three centuries of Spanish rule in the Philippines left a strong imprint on the vocabulary. Mesa (table), tenedor (fork), papel (paper), and asero (steel) are only a few of hundreds of Spanish words in Tagalog.
